Oxygen is the vital ingredient in the healing process, energy production,
metabolism, and brain function.

Oxygen is vital to the process and life of every cell in the body. It therefore makes sense that the physiology of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO or HBOT) would likely benefit many different types of diseases and may generate an improved sense of well being and quality of life.

There is much literature from Drs. Neubauer and Harch regarding the physiology of HBO on the brain, and acute and chronic effects of oxygen on various tissues in the body.

Patients who seek out Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy(HBO) often are facing chronic medical problems refractory to standard treatments. Many children and adults with neurological diseases and brain injury have exhausted medical treatment options.

Although it is not a cure, HBO will become increasingly utilized in the USA, as the remarkable benefits are clearly apparent to more numbers of patients and their caregivers.

As of now there is no cure for brain injury, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, stroke, spinal cord injury, and other neurological diseases.

HBO has demonstrated that it may improve quality of life and may improve function in activities of daily living for children and adults with these conditions.

Children with CP may experience a decrease in spasticity, improvement in balance, improved bladder and bowel control, less GI reflux, improvement in strabismus, enhanced “brightness” and improved speech and cognition, and an improved appetite. There have been reports of resolution or improvement in cortical visual impairment (CVI) aka cortical blindness.

Dr. Neubauer has done many case studies and extensive research on the effectiveness of HBOT and brain injuries.  Dr. Neubauer is the director of  Ocean Hyperbaric Neurologic Center.  Below is an excerpt from the Ocean Hyperbaric Neurologic Center website.

Hyperbaric oxygenation, or the use of greater than normal atmospheric pressure to deliver a high dosage of oxygen, corrects lack of oxygen not just in the blood, but in the tissues as well. This results in an increase of oxygen to the brain.

This is crucial for patients with Cerebral Palsy(CP) because in CP cases, there are areas of decreased blood flow and metabolism to the brain. When using HBO therapy, more oxygen reaches the cells thereby restoring blood flow to the brain. This is what holds encouraging hope for patients with CP and Tamatic Brain Injury(TBI).

HBO therapy reduces any pressure within the brain caused by swelling, restoring the functions of the blood brain barrier and cell membrane. It neutralizes toxic products in the brain, and over a period of time, enhances growth of new blood vessels. It also acts as a scavenger of free radicals and promotes internal cleaning of debris.

Also, HBO reduces the stickiness of blood products (white blood cells and platelets), and makes oxygen available for use without energy transfer (when the hemoglobin carries oxygen, it requires energy to deliver to the tissue spaces). With HBO, the free oxygen is available immediately for metabolic use.

Previous reasons for not giving oxygen to hypoxic (low oxygen) neonate or premature babies is that surface oxygen was thought to cause a type of blindness called retrolental fibroplasia. Recent uncovered data indicates that this is not true. The use of hyperbaric oxygen does NOT produce this effect. It is the withdrawal of the infant from the oxygen environment that causes the problem. Repeated sessions with oxygen have actually cured the situation.

The use of HBO therapy in CP, TBI, and in the very young can actually give the brain a jump-start. It also provides an ideal internal environment for the growth of new brain tissue.
